GAP Statements Assignment.

I made a simple statement talking about events after the civil war involving the rights of black people. My first reply was using pick a fight. This gap statement is one of my favorites as it gives a lot of room to write and add on to it. The second argument was a piggy back. Another one that’s good and comfortable to use when writing a gap statement. The last one was more or less an ass kiss. All these gap statements may have room for improvement but they still can be talked about and continued with far more information. This was only the smallest bit of info you can go much deeper with a topic like inequality of the black people after the civil war. All of these gap statements can make room with a more solid form and deeper form of writing. It’ll make your writing seem much more organized and together as apart from it being all over the place.

Grant Essay

Hello I am a student at the City College of New York and I am writing this to ask you for assistance. I am very interested in the computer science field and I want to make sure that my school has the funding and proper tools in order to build a proper curriculum for this field. Not only can I speak for myself but I know at this day and age computer science is a trending topic which in the future can help us become successful. Many people including myself want the proper tools in order to achieve this. Your grant proposes helping out schools with high-quality computer science curriculums. Many and myself included believe that these types of majors are the future of the world. Technology is playing a big factor in everyday life. I believe that getting to the top and mastering this technology will lead to you becoming successful and happy. You may ask why am I specifically interested in this major? Well I’ve always been fond of computers and working on them. I feel getting to know these computers even more and going more in depth with the science of it all would be interesting and something I purely enjoy. I’ve been told that it’s a hard subject but at the end it’ll all be worth it I hope. Through hard work and help from funding I can achieve my goals of graduating and having a job in this field. I think a big problem in many schools is the unfairness when it comes to funding for certain majors. Certain majors are favored over another and that doesn’t give students the chance to choose freely. Students may feel they have to choose certain majors because the school just favors that one much more than the other. Of course I’m speaking about public schools, not specific schools for certain majors. Everyone wants their major to be properly taught to them with the right tools to do so as well. I also ask for these funds to help the curriculum of a major I really care for which is important to me. What I plan to do when majoring in computer science is getting into internships as soon as I can, as for after I graduate it would be based on those internships and what place I have there. Computer science is something where you can have many options to choose from with those skills under your belt. Gaining funds would not only help students be able to learn but can even possibly set them up for a future that they’ve always wanted. Students being able to do their work on new computers would be a proper and the best way to do so. Instead of having to use old computers or have to do everything at home. A computer lab where students that share the same majors can also gather and do their work. All of this would be possible with the help of funds from your grant.

Conference Proposal:

We know much about the heroes of African Americans like Martin Luther King Jr, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B Du Bois, Frederick Douglas. They made great strides in this country when it comes to black rights, but what about the heroes who worked from the shadows? They also deserve to be talked about and inspired by. One person in particular is Bayard Rustin. Now the question is how can underground leaders that aren’t talked about a lot like Bayard Rustin help us understand even further the strides they made for black rights. Would it help us see even more in depth what exactly they thought about. I think it’s important to not always look at the cover of something but also see what’s behind it or what’s hiding because it can be just as important information if not even more important. A little background about Bayard Rustin, to start off he was the one who organized and strategized the March on Washington from the shadows. He was seen as a liability to be on the front lines because of his controversial ties to communism and such. But he deserves as much praise because without him the march wouldn’t have been as successful. Marches as big as these need preparation and smart minds because back then as we know the risk of doing these things was large and sometimes ended tragically. Learning about these underground operators will lead us to gain even more knowledge and be able to feel even further how it was to be in their shoes.

To fully understand the determination and how much these men during the civil rights movement sacrifice you must try and even relate to them. In this day and age all types of people and beliefs can now be openly accepted and you can find others like yourself. One example is the gay rights movement which has made great strides. During the age where a man like Bayard Rustin had to fight for rights just because of the color of his skin, things like being open about your sexuality was also a problem. Bayard Rustin never hid the fact that he was gay but he decided it was in the movements best efforts to stay in the backgrounds as to not have this fact highlighted and affect the movement. He gave up being open and fighting on the frontlines so that he can benefit the movement even more. This is also the reason why he isn’t as widely known since he never was truly at the front of it all. But he was a great man who even cast aside himself for this important movement. Now imagine yourself being non accepted because of your sexuality or your race or what not, would you be able to cast that aside for the benefit of others? It takes a lot for some people to be able to do this and shows what great a man Bayard Rustin was. This can also help us understand a little more how it was to be a part of this during that time. You had to sacrifice something in order to make change otherwise they wouldn’t have been able to reach their goal. The path was obviously a hard one but some people had to lose parts of themselves and cast aside their identities in order to reach their goal, this takes great courage.
To understand Bayard even more we have to take a look at where he comes from and how ideals grew into what they eventually became. Rustin was committed to non-violence, he was influenced by his grandmother who also participated in the movement for black rights. Now people fought over whether or not violence should be used in these fights for rights. People were angry for good reason and some only thought about violence. The few that weren’t I believe to be smart and one of them was Bayard Rustin. Violence wouldn’t solve anything in fact it would have made it worse. Ask yourself would you be able to put aside your anger and be non-violent. As stated before Bayard had even other reasons beside his rights as a black man to be angry about. But he stuck to being non-violent and smartly planned and helped the movements during his time. Being able to understand Bayard Rustin’s mentality through it all can help us understand him further. Rustin also had studied Gandhian philosophy which changed how he saw things and the way he handled situations. Bayard Rustin had gone everywhere he went to school, entered many organizations and gained a lot of experience. He was a smart man which of course makes sense since he planned such large movements that are now engraved into history. All these exceptional men have had years of education or experience. Rustin was also tied into religion, he joined organizations with Christianity based around it. One example would be, The Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He was a large part in its founding in fact. His knowledge was exemplary among the black men in America. It’s not easy being able to form an entire operation against the government’s ways and also at the same time being able to stay in the shadows because of it. He was an intelligent man that knew his way around the world and had the ability to make change. But still how can all this help us understand how it was back then?
There is tons of information on Bayard Rustin and I can go on stating all of it descriptively for too long. In order to understand someone you need some form of information about them of course. He was a man that was educated and a man with great experience being in organizations, even before the civil rights movement. It’s quite hard to understand completely just how it was to be there since we can’t but we can have an idea. Bayard Rustin had to sacrifice or give up part of himself just so the movement could move forward. You can infer that Bayard wasn’t the only person to do this, everyone has to sacrifice something in order to fulfill the end goal. It takes great courage and great mental strength to do this. He was and may still be a shadow figure because of this, his work for some people went unnoticed but he made great strides. A great man doesn’t need to be recognized or thanked, as long as they know what they’ve done that satisfies them enough. But recognition is still deserved as it lets us form a huge amount of respect for them and be able to go over what they accomplished. Bayard Rustin is only one example of great african americans that changed this country. There may be even more unknown men and women out there today that can be uncovered to even better understand the period of civil activision. These brave men and women cannot go unnoticed because their work may have made a difference but as said before they deserve recognition so we can learn from them and become better people using them as examples.
